Volatility at the Gate for BDI
VRS Research Team – Tuesday March 11th, 2025
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI)* settled at around ~1,424.00 points (USD) on March 11th, 2025 versus ~1,354.00 points (USD) in the beginning of December 2024, which was the release date of our previous blog.
During the year 2024, BDI traded within the broader range of 1,000 – 2,500 with continuous notable swings along a relatively downward trend line.
Our previous blog, in the beginning of December 2024 with the Index standing at ~1,354.00, was reading as follows:
“…The market and macroeconomic landscape as currently formulated is pointing towards normalization rather than disruption and as result this condition might be exerting pressures on charter rates in the dry bulk market. Inflation pressures appear to be under control, interest rates are more likely to lower than to rise, and geopolitics are surrounded by expectations of a resolution taking place sooner rather than later. The only counter sign in this market backdrop would be trade tensions between the major world economies that could emerge from the new US administration. In this context and for the remaining of the year, we would not see a significant upward reversal of BDI as the most likely scenario to occur and we would expect a trading range for the Index along the levels of 1,000 – 1,500. …”

Inter-ecosystem collaboration – can hubs like Singapore and Shanghai partner with New York (finance) or London (law)?
Maritime hubs without major ports – how does Oslo thrive without a large port?
